“OK,” Mom shouted as we drove to the new house, it was old, dark and had an over grown garden, well, in pictures it did. I could tell by her tone of voice she was tired. I would be if I had to look after 5 kids and teenagers while moving from Oregon to Texas.
“OW!” Sarah cried from beside me, “Mo-ommy!” She winged “ Johnny pulled my hair hard!”
“Johnny,” Mom called back with a sigh “Anna, why aren’t you sitting in between them?”
“I am! But they keep- Johnny don’t touch her hair- moving and pulling…” And with that, the car jerked on to the side of the road and Mom turned around, her eyes almost popping out of her head with mixed emotions. Whether she was going to shout or ask what do we want for lunch would come next.
“Johnny and Sarah, quiet down, now, Annalise is trying her hardest to control the baby and you two as well! So pipe down!” Mom said. The three of us were sitting on a big piece of wood I had no idea what she was going to use it as, and I was being enclosed in all directions. Johnny on my left, Sarah on my right and Kitty on my knee. The wood was doing a good job on my rear end, and with all of this and me inside a small old ford, well, that’s life I suppose!
“Michael, why do you get the front seat?” I asked as soon as Mom had taken of again. He couldn't hear me, he had his headphones on and was nodding along to the beat of, probable, some old Queen song.
After another hour and a half of driving/ being enclosed (now by Michelle’s book bag and Kitty on my knee)/ unreal heat, Mom pulled in to our new house and called back to us as if we were 50 ft. away from her, “Here we are!”
I looked out my window, so relieved to feel or even breath fresh air again, then the house caught my eyes....
